Claire & Lumpy are 'Best of Newbury'!

1 Nov 2006

Our founder, Claire Burdett, and Lumpy the Bear who loves Chocolate rather too Much, are appearing in the 'Best of Newbury' portrait exhibition at Newbury's Corn Exchange.

A Newbury-based writer and Director of Funky Angel, Claire was delighted to be invited to participate as one of the 'Best of Newbury' - and bring Lumpy along too! As Claire's says:

"I was delighted to be asked to sit for a portrait, and Lumpy had to come too, of course, with the obligatory chocolate! My book, "Lumpy Loves Chocolate" was inspired by a true incident at Nature's Corner in Newbury, which became a story I would tell the girls at bedtime...how Lumpy got lost and then tried to fly home - with sound effects , obviously, and Lumpy 'flying' round the bedroom...I mean, aerodynamically he'd put a bumble bee to shame, bless him!

And how he got confused and ended up the "shop with the yummiest chocolate" ie Nature's Corner, which was the only place that stocked Green and Black at the time! Liz Chandler had indeed rescued Lumpy a couple of years earlier, and popped him on a shelf with bars of chocolate under his arm and played along with the make believe when I bought the children in to collect him - what a star!

So I can safely say Lumpy is a true Newbury Bear!"

The portrait exhibition was organised by Neale and Sam James of 'Breathe Pictures' and Karen Homes of The Best of Newbury website, "the place to see and be seen in Newbury". The exhibition featured 200 of the top most Newbury characters and personalities and was opened at Newbury's Corn Exchange by Lord and Lady Carnavon on 3rd November 2006.

Part of the profits will go towards Newbury's air ambulance service.
